Backyard Brahmas!!

Since my girl decided she wouldn't be setting after all, I moved my hens back to where they all belong this morning. This was five minutes later.

I've decided, if this is where she insists on doing it, I'll give her a few eggs and let her have a shot. If she hatches them then I can give her some extra chicks if I have any luck myself. This coop she is in in 4x8, if all else fails I can just close her and the chicks up in it and make arrangements for them after that.

(These were fresh-laid dummy eggs, aside from the third one which had already gone cold.. Maybe that's why she hesitated on tht one?

)..
Sometimes, particularly the first time, they will only set where they want to set and with whom (who?) they wish to set with. If she want to be with everyone else, then I would just let her be. Just keep an eye on her if you put any fertile eggs under her, she only looks about 1/2 broody to me....doesn't quite have the broody trance going and I don't hear any growling from her....but maybe she is just very tame.

These are my awkward little month old brahmas. We have some blue and gold partridge, and a few splashes/red pyle (depending on what side of the pond you come from)

. They are very very active

and happy little birds, I caught them in a rare moment of rest. I can't wait to see them out of their awkward stage. They are moving into their new little house the beginning of next week right next door to the big full grown brahmas so they can get to know each other for awhile before I free range everyone in the Fall.
I love them in the ugly stage, but my husband calls the pterodactyls when they are at this stage. I guess I just love them at all of their stages!

Thanks! The only time she growls is when I actually pet her kinda overbearingly, or lift her up a little. It's like the "trill" noise a rooster makes when he sees something suspicious, is this the noise?

Either way, I gave her six fertile eggs tonight. I'm just so curious to see. I won't BE here to see, but we'll see. ;) I told my house sitter I'll be texting daily to see if she's still sitting lol.

I still have twenty in my bator.. I figure, either way I'm leaving Mother Nature in charge.. On one hand with storms/power, and the other with a beginner broody. :idunno

Thanks again for following! I'll let you guys know what ends up happening on both ends. :)

Yes, it is the noise. Try reaching under her to take an egg and see if she pecks at you. If she does, she's definitely "in the mood". If not, it doesn't mean that she's not in the mood, she may just be a nice girl. I've never had one that was nice, but many of my friends have.

So, good luck. I hope you marked the eggs in case everyone decides it is their favorite place to lay.

Here are some of my golds, and my gold partridge rooster.

My chicks came from a neighbor who has blue partridge birds . I am excited to see what lovely roosters and hens I get from my wee ones.

Yep they are. And there's only one other hen there, who uses the laying box (this one always laid on the coop floor which is also where she decided to set).. Oh and I put hay under her too. She stares your hand down when you reach for her as if a chicken who is about to bite.. She just doesn't. But the way she stares if I didn't know her, no way I'd keep reaching. :gig

Love!! Good luck. I'd love to have a blue rooster as well. They are gorgeous!

Look at those britches! Oh! He is beautiful!

I love my little guy right now. He's at that awkward teenager stage. Feathered out with his juvenile feathers but so gangly and funny looking. I can't wait till he's all grown up. But I don't want to wish his childhood away either. He's so funny right now. ^_^
