Backyard Brahmas!!

Well they say full maturity is 2 years old but just like a puppy gains most of the growth in the first 6 mos and just adds a bit more size and mostly girth after that I am counting on the same thing with the rooster.  So far at 4 1/2 mos old he is a full 4 inches taller than my largest hen that is a huge Buff Orpington. He only weighs as much as her though (almost 8 lbs) So I would bet now he will just start putting on weight mostly. He is already so big  that getting up on on something a foot off the ground takes some effort for him. He thinks about it for a very long time.
I can't wait to see how big mine get!! Love them being chicks too though. Thanks for the reply

Sexually mature, 8 mos (start laying). Height should be done at 1 year, although I've had some keep growing after that. Weight usually at about 15-18 mos. Generally speaking, mine keep growing until they are at least a year old...most of the time 1 1/2 years old. A lot depends on feed, a good balanced diet goes a long way.

I have 2 light brahmas that are my first chicks ever, along with 2 RIR's. Thier names are Sophia & Prascilla. They are 7 weeks now and they each have distinct personalities. Prascilla loves to get attention and always gets separated or lost so I can chase her around. Sophia is top hen and she lets the others know. So far I love this breed, as they are everything I hoped for. One thing for sure, they sure can eat. Their favorite food is ice cold watermelon. I got them from a feed store in Covington Louisiana.i hope Prascilla and the RIR's don't see this but Sophie is my favorite.

I had a light brahma I got from a hatchery, my Most Desired Chick in the group. And of course, 'she' ended up with tree trunk legs, a vertical stance and a love of twirling around dancing. I can't have boys so I found him a new home with a flock of ladies outside city limits. Still would love to have a LF brahma but I will have to wait for room in the coop. Maybe I can hatch some myself later this year. I just have to find a local breeder willing to part with some eggs.[/quote]

The mystery of the quiet rooster is solved...he is just a considerate rooster. I leave for work at 5 am during the week and have been asking my daughters "do you hear the rooster crow at all?" nope is always the response. I have heard nothing from him when I get home at 2pm. So this morning I got up at my usual 6am sleep in time for the weekend and I start listening....very quickly I hear a very low quiet crow from my backyard added to the cacophony of crows from the farms that are just about 3 houses from my suburban dwelling (we sit at the edge of suburban sprawl). I have actually opened the windows to be able to monitor the mystery. He actually goes on for about 15 to 20 crows while he is still on the roost and all the older girls are getting themselves out of bed. He and the pullets finally come on out of the hen house and he does not have another thing to say....he is too busy being bullied by the older hens and trying to get a drink and a bite. I will not complain at all if this is how it goes from here on out....fingers crossed.

This is South, his favorite wife and bookend to him is North. They got these names because my 24 year old daughter still names things like a 5 year old and I had promised she could name one, she named their flockmate EE "Easter" because I said we were hoping for colored eggs out of her....we subsequently named the other EE Wester to tease the daughter... so North and South got the other directions by default

Cute names. We've got an EE named BB because she was the runt and so small.

Thanks for your reply. May I ask what you feed yours. This is the first time I've ever had chickens. I want to feed them the best that I can. But I don't know a whole lot just yet.
