My son spared two young chickens from slaughter because they were too scrawny. They grew up to be handsome birds (a white roo and a red hen) and she laid 14 eggs before brooding. After 16 days one hatched! Could it be the 110+ degree weather?

The low hatch rate may very well have been impacted by the temperatures.

Should I wait for the others to hatch? This coming Tuesday will be 21 days of brooding.

As long as the eggs don't have a bad smell to them I would give them a few more days. Because she and the rooster were scrawny, maybe they were not in good health to be having a family. I would think with your continued good care they will flourish and go on to give you more/healthy chicks the next time.

A second chick hatched today while the hen & first chick were out foraging. The nest box is too deep (our ignorance) so we lifted the chick out to roam and feed. But now she doesn't know which chick to attend to! We plan on putting the first chick back in the nest at sunset and releasing them in the daytime- is that appropriate or should send
keep them in the nest?
