Backyard Chickens in Suburban Honolulu

Just an update:

The chicks are doing will. They're almost two months old and they are getting big. So far I've had no issues raising them. I think I've gotten into a rhythm: wake up to let them out. Let them "free range" the backyard for about an hour while I tend to the garden. Them put them back in the run and close the coop at about 8 pm. I give them some scratch in the morning, but they don't seem to like the cracked corn. They go bat-sh!t crazy for meal worms (I've started a meal worm farm...it's fun and easy).

Here's some pictures:

Hi, I live in Honolulu too and picked up some chicks from Asagi hatchery last week. Family feed store in Kalihi carries DE in plastic container. Can't wait to hear more about your chickens progress :)

What kind of chickens did you get? I ended up getting the DE from City Feed on Beretania. I just saw that you put that you got silkies and a buff orpington. I really wanted orpingtons. So if I read your post correctly, you got three chickens? What part of the island do you live in?

I have 3 black silkies and one buff Orpington right now. I'm suppose to get one more buff orpington and a ameraucana fom Waimanalo feed supply next week..

I love my Orpington, it is so tame and willingly jumps on my hand and likes to run all the way up my arm to hang out on my shoulder. The silkies are still scared of me...:(

If you ever plan on getting orpingtons you should order from Waimanalo. They have a 90% chance of being a girl. Asagi sells straight runs.

I live in the Moanalua area. How about you? It great to find other people who have chickens.

I'm in Hawaii Kai. I've got neighbors on three sides and I'm nervous about having three chickens. I wish I could get more chickens, but the law says we can only have two chickens per house. I guess you've got some good neighbors. I'm not keen on the idea of raising roosters, but I'd love to be able to breed and hatch my own chickens. So, to supplement my craving to raise poultry I'm going to start doing quail (no limit). I bought all my supplies today and I'll soon have a 5'x6'x2' (HxLxW) quail pen. Asagi is doing a quail hatch in July plus there are a couple people selling quail on craigslist. I'm going to start to raise, breed, incubate, and hatch the quail. I'm pretty excited! My wife...no so much.

for me personally, the key to keeping my neighbors okay with my chickens is giving them eggs. luckily for me, my neighbors are cool with my chickens even without giving them eggs but i give them anyways. i guess it all comes down to the immediate neighborhood where you live (i live in aiea). if anyone gave me grief about the small amount of noise my hens make when they lay in the late afternoon, i would point out to them it isn't any more noise than the barking silky terrier makes in the middle of the night.

Good point about the dog noise... I have a neighbor who's dogs bark constantly at night....:/

I guess the only difference is that the dog noises are typical of any neighborhood on Oahu. What I mean is that it's a noise that's just part of the background noise...like traffic, kids yelling and laughing, etc. There are dogs in my neighborhood that howl whenever a police/fire engine siren goes by, but are otherwise kind of quiet. Everyone is accustomed to these kind of sounds so it doesn't really bother anyone. Now chicken noises, on the other hand, are completely foreign to my neighborhood. That's why I think people are going to think it is louder than it really is, and people will take more notice of the chicken noises than the barking dogs. On a side note...Do quails make much noise? I'm going to get some to breed for eggs and meat so I'm going to need some male quails. Do the "crow" loudly?

Anyone tried to order an incubator from the internet? Usually I do my online shopping on Amazon, but there is no free shipping for the incubator (Hova Bator 1588) that I want. I'm checking the other websites Strombergs ($50.00 shipping) and Incubator Warehouse ($22.00) and some just flat out refuse to ship to Hawaii. Can anyone suggest a better store or maybe somewhere locally that would be better. This is what I'm looking at plus adding the quail rails:

Has anyone had any experience locally incubating their own eggs? Does anyone know if the mainland companies can ship us fertile eggs? The lady Strombergs said that she was pretty sure the fertile eggs would be refused and sent back. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
