"Backyard Poultry Magazine" -- Any good?

I enjoy my subscription to Backyard Poultry, but like others, I am a chicken newbie. I've received two issues so far. I've seen back issues on eBay. Maybe buy one there and see if you like it? Or check to see if your library has it?

We love Back Yard Poultry.

My 12 year old daughter takes it the day it comes and reads it cover to cover, usually the same day. Her favorite part is the chicken page in the back. Has jokes, games, etc.

We have had poultry for 12 years and I learn something new from every issue. Usually the breed that is featured.

I'm pretty new at chickens too, going on my 2nd yr with, but love Backyard Poultry! I've learned something from almost every issue or been able to forward info to someone that needed it. I also get Poultry Press and like that as well. They have a coupon in each issue for 5.00 off the 2nd 50lb bag of Purina, and I feed Layena for the girls and StartNGrow for the new chicks, so it comes in handy for that too.
I just started a subscription to Hobby Farms last month and really enjoyed this issue, so that's one I recommend as well.

I don't think you'll be disappointed!

My only complaint about backyard poultry is that you have to wait too long to get it

.........i think it should be MONTHLY. Maybe with the poultry hobby growing so rapidly they will do that one day. Its a great magazine.

Charter subscriber to Backyard Poultry, I really enjoy it. I'm with Pat about Hobby Farms, too much gentlemen farming in there for me - I prefer Countryside and Backwoods Home. I also subscribe to Mother Earth News but have to hold my nose at the politics.

Same here, Ann, about the politics!

They've grown too commercialized for my taste. Backyard Poultry seems a little the same way, as well. Beautiful glossy photos and lots of fancy breeds but not much emphasis on the plain old standard breeds and flock related issues.

Countryside has more practical information available with each issue than I have found anywhere on poultry. Has more experiences from the common man, was well as questions from the same. I find I relate to this type of article more so than about "fancy and specialty" poultry and their issues. I guess I feel its more geared to breeders, pet chickens, etc. than I care for, but if that is one's focus when raising their particular birds, it may be a fine publication.

What I did was buy a few back issues and looked through them. I got different months to see what all was offered throughout the year. I love it! Im planning on getting a subscription(both CS and BP) once I slow down with money spending around here. With buying banties, new coop materials, garden crap, etc. If Im not buying one thing its another.
