Backyard Slaughter- same dumb dog

We "get" it. So sorry to hear of your loss.

Always seems like the favorites are the one who die.

German Shepherds are great dogs to have with other animals. (You do have to have previously declared yourself the Alpha & stand by it unfailingly, of course). Properly trained they see them as their flock. I have two that were rescued as adults & one that was adopted as a puppy. I'm certain these city dogs had never seen a chicken. After just a few short lessons letting them know the birds were mine, they all know that the chickens (and cats) are to be either ignored or protected. Two summers ago my next-door neighbor's German short-haired pointer (an incredibly dumb dog in comparison) came into our yard & attacked a cochin roo I had let roam a bit. I saw the attack as it was happening from inside my house & ran to the back door. My male German shepherd was inside with me but realized what the dog was doing & attacked the pointer before I knew what was going on. 2 years later he will still try to go after that dog. He has not forgotten the attack on his flock. (The roo survived). Interestingly, the neighbor now keeps it in a kennel, but the few times I've seen him loose he will not come near our yard. FYI: Hawks also seem to respect my dogs when they are "on patrol". The geese keep hawks away as well, but, the only problem is, they also completely boss my dogs, and my shepherds are huge at 100 to 125 lbs each. Silly geese!

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt that says "I'm an idiot!".

Last fall I made TWO stupid mistakes, which resulted in one of my dobermans killing my ENTIRE first flock of 14 birds. That included the dear Priscilla, who would lie in my arms watching the world go by. She is now my avatar pic. I feel your pain!

She, on the other hand- is still a killing machine. She hasnt learned, and never will

It's in the DNA in those little dogs. So sorry

Mom 2em All,
Just wanted to show you a picture of our wiener with the chickens. I think some of them can be trusted, with a little persuation. We also have a Bull Terrier (like the Target Dog/Spuds MacKenzie) that pays about as much attention to the chickens as he does rocks.

Now, before everybody jumps on me for my bald butted hens, I know, my fault, my mistake, I take full responsibility. The roosters have been locked up and I have chicken saddles on order. Once again, sorry for you loss and best wishes.

I'm sooo sorry for your accident. But you are NOT and idiot, just human like the rest of us. Now that you know the weakness in your system, maybe it's time to make some changes. Like a strong dig-proof pen that your Dox must be put in every time it's let outside so no one has to look to see if the chickens are out. Or maybe the chickens are penned every time you are not there to guard them. Little changes can make all the difference and every accident can be seen as an opportunity to improve the situation. Now perhaps you should consider hatching eggs from your special birds that were lost, you said they had just started laying again.

Yes, we do feel you pain and understand.

I am so sorry to hear of our loss. Try not to be too hard on yourself over it. Accidents happen.

I have a question though...why have a dog inside that is not housebroken that you cannot safely leave outside? Sounds like a mis-match of home and dog.

If it were me...dog would find a new home because it does no one any good to have to worry about opening the door on the weekends and the dog running out or the shear hassle of it. Just my 2 cents worth.
