Bad case of the scaly mites on 3 silkies Pics included

It really doesn't matter what oil you use. The point is to smother the mites. This kills them. I used ivomec pour on (three drops for a tiny bantam) as a backup to make sure they all were gotten. I would treat them all just in case. It does no harm. These things can get out of hand quickly and really damage the birds.

the pour on, would i put that in the usual spot (back of neck) or direct on the feet??

And I put it directly on the feet, put it at the top and let it run down, I do it once a week for 2 weeks sometimes 3 if it is a really bad case.

Your poor birds! Part of me doesn't know why I want to know all this stuff and another part of me is glad to know it in case I see something I can treat it asap.

I am sure there are many methods. I put oil on the legs to smother the mites and the pour on either under the wings or at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades.

just took a good look at the orpingtons, they are infested with mites/lice

I was scrolling through these forum last night and came across this, i have never really looked at my silkie's feet until i saw these pictures. As grose as it is, I thought my chickens couldn't possibly have it. So I took a look at there feet tonight and guess what? My younger silkies about 4 of them do not have anything like this, but my Older ones do, I have about 7 older ones with this, HOW ON EARTH DO I GET RID OF IT.. I immediately, put vaseline on there feet tonight but how often do I do this and should I wash there feet first, perhaps use tick and flea shampoo that you use for dogs? I have Frontline Flea and Tick spray it's for dogs but should I put this on there feet, Perhaps I should spray them all with it? is it possible that I can get this? Should I stop collecting eggs, could this be on the eggs? or inside them?

My one silkie roos has it really bad, in fact when I put the vaseline on his feet they started cracking, chunks of skin or dirt or whatever this is just started flaking off. This is horrible, I would have never pay any attention to there feet, I'm so glad I came across this last night... I also noticed an oder, is it suppose to smell? Not only is this one there feet but some of them have it crawling up there little legs, when I put the vaseline on the females feet they seem to pull away and cackle, do you think it hurts them?

Do I need to bath them? I really can't bath them right now because our weather has been terrible cold..

Please help me save them, Also if left untreated could it have killed them? Need to know more now that I have fallen as a victim of it.. Yek..

I pm'd you. Also you don't need to bathe them. You want the crusty stuff to fall off. Keep oiling them till it is gone. Some patches you may have to help ease off. Just be careful not to rip them off. Let the oil do the work. Yes they can smell to high heaven. It really is a stench! It doesn't affect their eggs.
