So my wedding anniversary is coming up at the end of this week, and I planned a little camping trip to Lake Erie.
Last night I read that Toledo, surrounding areas and parts of Michigan have a water ban due to poisonous algae in the drinking water. Boiling just makes it worse, causing the stuff to release more of the toxin.
My wife still wants to go, so we are leaving Wednesday morning to go up there. Sounds like safe water will be in short supply, and fishing may be hazardous to my health.

Hey there,

I have been watching that story over here near the Cleveland area of the lake and that's the same story I got, where as my 'old' man said that another source said it was fertilizer run-off from farming. I am starting to wonder who is full of, well fertilizer of the organic kind....(?)
My first thought was, what 'toxin' cannot be killed in boiling water that actually emanated from algae? That (via ignorance on my part) makes NO sense. If anyone has heard the same thing please tell ....

Well farm and grass fertilizer run offs increase the phosphorous levels in the water. The algae uses that to grow and produces a neurotoxin as it uses the phosphorus. The toxin doesn't break down under heat, but boiling the algae makes it produce more as it dies off. So boiling actually makes it worse.

Down here in my area of Ohio, several animals and even people have become sick from lake waters with the same algae.

Grand Lake St. Mary's and Lake Laramie have dealt with it for years, and fishing there quite a bit I've learned a thing or two about it.
I find it surprising that Erie would have that big a problem with it considering the volume of water.

Nice to hear they lifted their ban, which hopefully lifts any dark cloud over 'date', to make it great!
Forgot to mention... I just bought 6+ English Orpington eggs! About to become an official crazy chicken lady!

Lol, I'm trying to get stuff ready for the trip and instead end up doing work for my mother and grandmother fixing their tvs and phones. Guess that may pay for them taking care of our pooches while we are gone.
