Yeah, toxins are seriously scary things. Something to always be aware of if neighbors are nearby.
All the guessing in the world will not solve the mystery of why your birds died. Only a necropsy will do that and even then it might only be a possible cause of death. I have a bunch of ducks that are all from the same hatchery, were bought together and have been together all their lives. When they were about 4-5 months old I went out to let them out on morning and two of them were dead. Just lying there like they were asleep. Everyone else was, and continues to be, fine. I did send them to Texas A&M to see what had happened and the report I got back was "undetermined insect toxin"...in other words they either were bit or ate a poisonous insect like a spider or something.
