Bad Rooster

I would keep him personally, but be guarded OR replace him. Especially if you free range. I have always had a rooster (or roosters) and they do protect the flock and will give their life if need be. I have many times found my roosters or walked in on a fight occurring so I know for fact my roosters protect their hens. I know some people say they don't or won't, but I have witnessed it. I don't know if its based on breed/traits, but I always lost a rooster over a hen due to predators and my rooster fighting back.

A mean rooster will not change. I had a very mean rooster named Cody. He would give me the "look" and then attack. I had to have a stick or boots on so I could keep him at bay or kick him back. One day I had the dog by my side when Cody attacked. That was the last move he ever made. Moki didn't like him trying to hurt me and grabbed him. He ran away into the hills with Cody and I never saw him again. (Cody, I still have Moki) I wasn't sad either. GET RID OF THE ROOSTER! If he is young enough you can eat him!
:rant

This is Cody's "look".

I now have a beautiful and extremely gentle rooster named Harvey. He is a Jersey Giant, 18 inches tall and wouldn't hurt a fly!
Awww Harvey looks sweet!! I hope our new Broad rock will be sweet. As for the nasty Roo, he DOES need to go before someone else gets injured.

Yes, get rid of him NOW! I wouldn't wait. You have a couple of young guys growing, right? Wait and see who comes out well behaved and let him be the main rooster. Also Harvey has a thread of his own under the forum "Chicken behaviors". Good Luck, you will work it out I know! :hugs

Will do! Thanks so much for the advice. I think I have a couple young ones that will be wonderful! I will check out the “chicken Behaviors” forum I do love to learn about all their different behaviors! Thanks again!

Where are you located? I’m looking for a mature Phoenix rooster. The aggressive roosters learn fast around here not to be jerks. I’m sorry you broke your leg. I bet it makes chores tough. If you’re nearby or if you can ship/ are NPIP I’d consider taking him off your hands. I even have a few lovely roosters of various exotic breeds I could trade you. They are all wonderful gentlemen.

Awww, we found him a new home already.

well, I have a beautiful Phoenix rooster that protects the ladies very well. I use to have a stick to remind him who is boss. I got too comfortable with him and he went after me. I ran backwards, stepped in a hole and twisted my leg causing fracture in my fibula. He tried to go after my husband again as well. I think it’s time for him to go. My only concern are the 10 hens he has been protecting and whether they can help themselves if a predator comes around once HE is gone?. They are free range so I worry about them, but also can’t afford anymore injuries. Advice would be wonderful!!!

Our first rooster got mean after he turned about a year. We kept him around, for too long, not sure why. He would stalk us and try to strike us with his spurs. Then one day my husband and I decided to make rooster pot pie. It was a great decision, we had a tasty meal and the farm was once again peaceful. We've had many roosters come and go since then. Some get aggressive with us and/or the hens and into the pot they go. Others have been good hawk watchers, good with the hens and don't ever bother us at all so they get to stick around.

Before getting rid of your rooster, I would give him an attitude adjustment. There was an article somewhere on this site where a lady recommended getting a hold of the rooster by cornering him in a coop, holding him securely under your arm, and then take your nail and peck him on the top of the head with your finger. Chickens have a pecking order and when you do this, you become the big, bad rooster and he will learn to respect you. You may have to do this more than once. I tried this with one of my roosters who started attacking me and it worked! It took two times of me cornering him, holding him under my left arm, and pecking him on his hard skull with my right hand. It's a fun experiment, actually! :)
