Bad swollen ear

Sorry new to this. Anyways, it seems my 8/9 week old chick has the same thing with her ear. I am going to attempt to remove the infection, I'm nervous as I don't want to hurt her. I've been giving her antibiotics for 3 days now but it's not going down in size. Any other tips? I know this was a long time ago. Did it come back after it healed? Thanks!

Can you post a picture? What antibiotic and dosage are you giving? Does she have any other symptoms, such as head shaking, sneezing, or nasal drainage? Can you clean out her ear with QTips and some 1/2 strength hydrogen peroxide (use it just once) and use the Qtips again, and put some plain triple antibiotic ointment in her ear? It might hurt a little, but getting any infection out may help.

Thank you for your reply. I am giving her 50mg of cephalexin twice a day. She is also sneezing but I don't see any nasal drainage and no coughing. I've cleaned her ear out with peroxide and put antibiotic cream on/in it. I'm sending a picture. And feedback is appreciated. Thank you!!

Yes it looks swollen. There is usually solid dried puss inside the ears with ear infections, so it might need to be "dug out" gently.

Yes I tried and kept wetting it with peroxide to loosen it up but I only got a little bit out. I was stressed out I was hurting her.i just put the antibiotic cream on and now I'm just hoping she gets better. I've also been putting vet Rx on her beak and under, as well as in her water. The sneezing has been going on for a little over a week. I'm concerned about my big chickens even though they sleep separately.

The cephalexin dosage should be 25 mg per pound given every 6 hours for 7 days. Four times a day is the best with the doses being spread apart. She probably has a respiratory disease such as infectious bronchitis or MG if she is also sneezing. That can affect the ears. IB is a virus, but the antibiotics may help the ear infection or prevent other secondary diseases. Let us know how she gets along. Here is a good link to read that includes most of the respiratory diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044
