Bag out of Layena package (updated w tutorial)

Get yourself a cheap machine,or should i say an older used machine.Sewing by hand would not give u enough strength,i double sew my seams.An older machine is probably better to sew these, my machines r all ages and the newest best machine i have did a lousey job.

Here's my first attempt. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I did not bother sewing the triangles down on the bottom (I have a love-hate relationship with my machine as it is...drives me batty that I can't reverse the stitch at all due to a stupid design that put a metal knob inside a plastic switch thus causing the plastic to be destroyed by regular use) so I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt. Thanks to whoever suggested using paperclips to "pin" the plastic prior to sewing! It worked like a charm (although mine looked a bit odd as the only paper clips I have in the house are flea shaped). I did find that I could "iron" the plastic by running it back and forth across the edge of the table, which came in really handy when I went to do the handles.

Now I have to find the time to work on the bag from the scratch grains. And as soon as the weather stops being so ugly and the white stuff stays away I'll rescue the bag from the chick grower I have out on the patio and see if it's still usable after being out in the elements for a few months.

ETA: Kansaseq, LOVE those checkbook covers! Don't suppose you could post a tutorial on how to make those? Or even just a few hints? My checkbook cover finally died a horrible slow death and I've been thinking about going to the fabric store and getting material to make a new one. Now I'm really thinking about using a feed bag!

That crumbles bag is very cute. How did you decide to do the bottom if not the triangles? I have been reading the Backyard Poultry instructions for their bag and getting ideas on how to try it differently next time. My son came in and saw my progress on my bag and thought it was great

passed his organic/ recycle test. He works hard to keep me green.

Thanks! I really don't know how to sew, and basically took out my cheap, plastic checkbook cover, and made an old fashioned book cover for it. Only difference is that I sewed and hemmed the edges. If I have time this weekend, I can try to put together some directions for people, if you guys are really interested.

My next project is to try and make a wallet--have a friend who is begging me to make her one. Just need to see about getting some snaps and more thread. Oh, and more needles! I've gone through a few on these projects.

Thank you! I tried to copy a messenger style bag I saw on another site, and it came out ok. Worked great today in the torrential downpour we had; kept my stuff nice and dry.
I made a small one that would be perfect for a lunch bag, and I was wondering, too, about the insulation stuff. I have more ideas of how to use these bags, like a rain coat for the dogs, complete with hat! That would be SO funny
