Bag out of Layena package (updated w tutorial)

I have vacation time coming up in the next couple of weeks. I was planning on teaching myself to sew anyway during this time, so guess who's going to try her hand at making some of these bags? My mom gave me a sewing machine that she bought in 1984--still in the box & never used! I have been saving my feed bags for about a year or so...right after I first saw this thread. Time to put them to use, huh? I know it sounds easy, but I'm not real swift when it comes to being 'crafty.' I do want to try my hand at making a back-pack type bag, but only after I've mastered the basic bag. I've gotten big on recycling, so this just adds to that! I am so stoked about this!
Thanks, to all of you for the great info & pictures of what you've done; it's helped give me the urge to get it done.

When you start to sew just go slow and steady because the bags are slippery. It will take a bit of getting use too since you've never sewn before. Good luck.

Hello all,
I am in need of a sewing lesson here. Some of you line your totes (love it). How do you do that? I can sew somethings but this stumps me. Do you have any pictures of how you've done this? Yep, I'm more of a visual type but instructions work well too.

Just finish an egg carton tote. It holds 3 dozen.

As far as lining them. Make the same size lining as you do the bag. I used a tutorial from "Skip to my Lou", I will see if

Hi guys, just made my first bag, it is functional, but not pretty.

I am not one to sew. I got a sewing machine several years ago, and do small projects, but have no one to really ask about sewing machine trouble. so, when I did my bag tonight, it worked, the top stitch looked good, but I had furry under stitches. I really am not sewing machine literate, what do I adjust to not have furry under stitching? I'm sorry to be so clueless, I wish I had done more sewing with my mom, but well, I didn't. So here I fumble along asking my fellow BYCers for sewing advice. Thanks in advance for help.

Thanks, I brought my "furry" bag to work today and I am not what they consider the "sewing" type, so after they giggled at me, they were impressed with how the bag looked, without regard to the furry work. I am going to bring my machine in and let them show me how to adjust. I have gone over the silly manual and I think it may be my overall not understanding much about sewing that is not allowing me to "see" where my error is. Thanks. I thought this over after I posted. But I LOOOOVVVEEEE the bag and even more so now that my coworkers have given me positive feedback on what a cool idea this is. Jennie
