bald cardinal?

This pitiful cardinal showed up at my bird feeder this week. I hope it is just molting. Anyone else ever see this phenomenon?

It is more than likely molting, but he could have a serious case of mites.

My parents have had one like that at their feeders for two years straight. They have wetlands behind them and have dozens of cardinals. Never more than one bald one at a time though. It's a little creepy but he seems healthy enough.
