bald chick just born

I have no idea why he would have a bald spot. If it is not aggression from the others, than must be some sort of genetic thing causing the lack of feather growth. You might post this in our Raising Chicks forums for some ideas on why this is...

Hello and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some good advice and suggestions. Did he have that at hatch, or is it a recent development (could one of the other chicks be pecking it off?) Occasionally chicks seem to hatch with bald spots or not much down on their backs, usually does not mean much in the long run... one thing I think has happened before is if the chick was a little bit stuck to the shell or didn't get the membrane off right it will stick to the down and pull it out.

I found this thread a few weeks ago when I was searching for answers on the the same question about my black sexlink chick but there wasn't an update about what happened to the original chick in question...so if anyone else finds this thread and are fretting... I just want to say that in my case, the chick who had the bald spot's almost 5 weeks old and she's doing great, feathering out nicely.

I believe Kelsie2290's theory that it happens during hatching when some goo dries on with the shell and thereby some down gets waxed off.

Thank you for the update, as one of my black sex link chicks has the same issue but seems happy and healthy otherwise. It seems to be something that happens with this particular breed, so that interesting. So glad to hear she will eventually grow feathers. I was already mentally preparing for a house chicken that wear little sweaters! lol
