Bald eagle sighting

This is crazy timing! Not 15mins after I posted I saw a bald Eagle flying upriver and he stopped and perched high up in a tree looking directly at my house and chickens AND I have a new puppy. Now I'm worried for the first time. I mean they really are HUGE. When they fly overhead and I'm standing Riverside I see a shadow like an airplane go overhead. Guess we're both going to be careful!!!

Oh no! Their magnitude is definitely impressive. Yes, we have to keep a close eye on them.

I have a hawk thats been flying around and looking at my chickens, he perches in the tree and calls out all day. I havent seen the bald eagle in awhile. Hope everyone can keep there flocks safe, it doesnt help a farmer up the road throws meat in his field all summer and stops as soon as winter hits we have fox, coyote, eagles, hawks, dogs, cats and mice. All things that i wish i could keep out of my yard. The cats are ok and a few of the dogs are but not anything else.

My biggest worry is a huge horned owl that roosts in oak tree in my neighbor's yard that overlook my back yard. The owl frightenes me at night with its incessant screaching!! Its big incentive for ,e to get my boys in to the coop before dark!! I have once come home late and felt mauseated with worry amd the miserable with remorse for my neglect. I wont do that again!

A pair of bald eagles has been nesting within view of our property for years and have never bothered my ducks. This spring, however, at least 17 young eagles showed up from who-knows-where and two of my ducks were attacked. They killed chickens, ducks, rabbits, small dogs and even a lamb while they were here, terrorizing the neighborhood. That lot dispersed over summer so we are down to the original pair now, but we hung bird netting over a large section of the yard adjacent the duck pen and keep their pools under it so they spend most of the day there. The netting does a good job of deterring eagles, hawks and even our friendly crow family, but I hope that rowdy lot of eagles doesn't return next year.

Im so sorry!

Encourage crows to settle in your area. Crows and eagles are enemies and an eagle in crow territory will be driven out. I've seen some fascinating crow behavior when it comes to eagles and hawks for that matter. Crows will call all crows in the area to oust out an eagle even if the crows are not from the same flock.

He is interested in your ducks. He will be back. It may be necessary to keep them in their pen for a while.
Yes, 100%. We had a black vulture diving to attack out chickens. They started running and it chased them for a moment, we scared him off just in time before he got to them, but for a few days after he came circling our house looking for them or watching them from a tree.

I agree about encouraging crows. They are nice to have around and get along well with our ducks. We have a pair that nests in our trees every year, with a large extended family in the area. They do a good job protecting the ducks... except when they don't. There were so many eagles here this spring the crows were at a disadvantage. When one of my ducks was attacked they couldn't chase off all three eagles involved. We were able to intervene and run them off, but too late. The duck was dead. Several dozen crows appeared from nowhere, perched on the tree overlooking the duck area, and silently, almost respectfully, watched as I collected the remains. It was the same sort of funeral I've seem them hold when one of their own dies. They eventually left, one or two at a time, flying down to inspect the spot where the duck had lain, then moving on, never making a sound. It was probably a learning moment for them, but I found it kind of touching.
