Hi,

I have 4 chickens 1 cream legbar, 1 exchequer leghorn and 2 bantams. I have had them since chicks and they are now about a year and a half old. I have just noticed that the legbar has quite a big bald patch under her chin and i do not know why. She along with the leghorn have just started laying again. THe bald patch does not look that red or raw.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Sometimes birds will groom each other and pull out neck feathers, not sure if that is what happened to your hen.

Glad you joined us! The feather loss could be from pulling by another bird, or she may have mites/lice. I'd look on her skin and feathers for moving black or yellow specks (mites) or white egg-like things (lice eggs).

Sounds like molting. Look else where on her body for pin feathers, especially on the head and back of the neck. Pin feathers are newly growing feathers that start out with a shaft of paper skin like material that as the feather grows, the bird preens off. If you are seeing new growth of feathers elsewhere on the body, than this bald patch is part of the molting process.

Enjoy all your babies and it is great to have you aboard!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Looks like everyone has covered the usual causes, over grooming/feather plucking by another bird (they will often do this on the roost in the evening) lice/mites, or partial molting even if she just started laying again...

Alright

The bald spot can be caused by a great many things like other chickens pulling them to body bugs even from rubbing on something but first you need to take a close examination of this chicken head to foot as one would say checking for any many different bugs just to rule that out just for health reasons alone next is there something she could be rubbing her chin on in the nest to cause the balding if these are ruled out then it is most likely from the other chickens pulling on them
