Hello! New here, but I’ve been reading the forums for better than a year soaking up the years and years of experience. So thank you!

Today my question is about the bald spot on the back of one of my standard chickens. I know there can be several causes, so I’ll explain our current circumstances and post a pic.

We lost our rooster about three weeks ago, but until then he was quite fond of Mrs. O’Brahama (no relation). I’m sure at least some of her feather coverage was lost due to mating. Two other hens lost some feathers in the same spot, but theirs seem to be filling in or at least I can’t see their skin. The rest of the flock (10 others) are not missing any feathers.

Despite reading about molting, I’m new to this, so I’m not sure I know what it’s supposed to look like and if it happens to all at the same time or in each hen’s own time

Your thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Good to know. Thank you! We are no longer going to keep a rooster with this flock. Will she heal or do we just need to keep her sunscreened?
