hello! I’m building a coop this week, and my chicken keeping friend has six chicks for me when I’m ready. We live in the city, but have .6 acres (that’s POINT 6!) so we have plenty of room for a small flock. I’ve wanted chickens for years, but I travel, so... it hasn’t been practical. My husband and I are stiltwalkers, balloon twisters, musicians and I dance, so we spend a lot of weekends entertaining at festivals, or sometimes even weeks off at a Ren Faire. But I’ll find neighbors to help, or just stay home more.
we have a 5 lb. cockapoo who.... is a chicken killer. She has three working legs and is 14 years old now, and I HOPE I can train her to not catch them, but she might just be “my first predator” to protect them against. There are foxes and rats around, but opossum and raccoons I haven’t seen in my neighborhood, but they are definitely in Baltimore.
I absolutely love eggs. I’m mostly vegetar in my eating habits, and my folks didn’t die of heart disease so I’m not at all worried about cholesterol. Oh, my husband and I are fifty seven years young.
We are currently completely out of work, of course- parties and festivals and other events are not happening in the pandemic, so no work for us. Our 18 year old is back home because his college is closed, and our 16 year is also home from school.
anyway, so excited to join!

Hello and welcome to BYC! This is a great place to learn and share your chicken adventures. You will love the quality of the eggs your ladies will make for you. I grew up in Baltimore and spent enough of my adult life there to know that there really are racoons and opposums about. A sturdy 1/2 inch hardware cloth will keep the four legged predators out, but you may need something stronger to keep the two legged predators out. Best of luck with your new flock.
