I want to be able to manage my flock a bit better when it comes to ages and when to butcher/ cull.

I have a new set up chicks in the basement so I will know how old they are. But I also have a broody going and an incubator on the way.

The new chicks will not be a problem as I know what kind they are and ages will be easy to determine. When my barn yard mixes start hatching out it will not be so easy. Is there a way to band them to be able to keep track of who is who?

Depending on the age, wing bands and leg bands, or if you are not squeamish there is a tool I think it is called a toe punch. However you decide to band or mark your chickens....Make sure to keep a Brood Book (just a book (regular notebook is fine) with everything wrote down in it, what is what).
