Banding questions

I would like to start banding my chicks so I know not only what year they are hatched, but as I start getting the color eggs I want, what color eggs the chicks are hatched from. Do you band once as chicks and they just stay on, or do you have to cut them off and re-band as they get older? How do you know what size bands, or do they only come in 1 size. Where do you get bands from?

I use colored zip straps. I don't band them until full-grown--worried that they'll grow and something will happen to prevent me from getting the band off before it starts causing trouble.
