Bantam Ameraucana

Wouldn’t it be nice if only one were a male!
Someone pointed out that when shopping for chicks in a farm store straight run bin, that the pullets are more likely to be ignoring you, looking down, acting ‘bland.’ That the friendly ones who look at you and approach your hand are probably the cockerels. So I am betting your outgoing one is a cockerel, based on that theory.
They look good!!!!
I would laugh if I only had one cockerel. I was sort of hoping for 2 or 3:oops:.. for sake of options.
I do somewhat agree, usually pullets avoid touch, but males are more friendly. I’ve had friendly pullets and skittish cockerels though, so it isn’t an 100% guarantee. The way my “show off” was puffing though, I’m fairly sure it’s a male.
I would like to wait longer before making a real estimate.
I went out and peeked at them, and proved my previous statement wrong. Some have similar stances compared to “show off”, but I still admit he’s the prettiest. They don’t really puff themselves out like he does, and most of the others don’t have as many tail feathers as he does.

This is the show off, again-

Also, How are you doing? Have you gotten eggs yet?
I am still waiting for a broody before I go get eggs to hatch. It will probably be next month. My candidate has already successfully raised babies, and I am looking forward to having her raise these bantams.
I was only going to get 6 eggs. Since they won’t be going thru the mail, maybe there’s a better chance of all hatching. But maybe I should ask for more. I’d like to have 3 females and keep one cockerel. If there were 4 pullets, I’d keep all four. (Here I am counting my chickens before the eggs are even laid 🙃)

No, I have not gotten eggs yet. I’m waiting for a hen named Violetta to go broody. It will probably be this month. Another has gone broody first, but she isn’t a proven mom. I’m also wanting the hen to brood the eggs in my little blue coop, and Violetta is the only one who has done so before. No one wants to use that nest/coop this year, but I’ll see if Violetta can be relocated and stay there since she’s done it before.

Your are a little young but wheaten and blue wheaten are easy to sex around 6 weeks old. Check the chest feathers as they come in. Pullets will be a light wheaten color and cockerels will have black or blue coming in. Here is a picture the ones with the arrows are cockerels. I have had just as many friendly and assertive pullets as cockerels.

@I Like Turkeys any updates, new pics? I still haven’t gotten hatching eggs yet, my best broody candidate is not yet ready.
Yes. Chicks are 7 weeks old but I haven’t seen the males turn black/blue yet. This is the friendly one. It has the comb growth to say male, but is still mostly red; albeit it is a darker red than the two females I believe I have. I’m a bit worried I’m doing something wrong.

@I Like Turkeys —how are the chicks doing now? Any photos?
I still haven’t had a broody hen, which seems unusual with these girls.
I do have an incubator, but really want hen raised chicks, as I feel the imprinting makes a difference, especially w the boys.

Sorry for the delay. I've got photos. I’m down to a trio- 1 male and 2 females.
i did have 4 males and 2 females, but a few weeks back I moved the ameraucanas into a larger pen. 3/4 of the males promptly died of coccidiosis, pretty upsettingly. It’s even more upsetting given they were already fully feathered and off heat, so I dont understand why they got sick. The male i have left also got sick, but made a recovery. He happens to be the chick who was most friendly with me. Both pullets are fine, completely healthy and unaffected. They’re all friendly, but the male a little bit more so.

I have an order in for some of McMurray's bantam Ameraucana. Are theirs true purebreds? The description for the bantam Ameraucana leads me to believe they are pure, while their standard Ameraucanas look like Easter eggers. If they're not, where can I get true bantam Ameraucanas?

She’s wonderful I just hatched the bantams (true ameraucanas)
