I have read several times in various articles that chick chatter can mean that they are uncomfortable; that the temperature is too hot or cold or that something worrisome is nearby. My 4 week old Bantam Cochins chat constantly when they are awake. They are like a gaggle of book club enthusiasts who all have something important to say, often at the same time. They do not sound distressed to me. It is usually pleasant and endearing chirping except for an occasional shriek when one has something the others want (usually a mealworm or piece of kale). Should I be concerned about my conversational savants?
