Hi all, I'm considering what breed to go with for backyard chickens. I love the lookof bantam cochins and think they may be a good choice for my family. But I'm wondering about egg production as I'm seeing a lot of conflicting info. I'd like several eggs per week but I dont want to be overrun with eggs we can't use. We currently go through abt 9-12 eggs a week. I can only have 4 hens due to city ordinance. If you currently have or have had bantam cochins and could weigh in on egg production I would greatly appreciate it!

Remember, bantam eggs are roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of a chicken egg, so you would be going through 27-36 eggs a week at the most.
Hm, The cooking calculation I found was 2 bantam eggs to 1 full size egg. The info out there is everywhere! Thats why Im really looking for feedback from bantam cochin owners! Do your eggs average the smaller size?

I have some elderly girls.
When young my black cochin laid around 4 a week (when not broody).
My silver laced cochins laid around 3 a week. They never went broody.

That said.....my giant cochins.....they don't even lay 2 a week. :hmm When they DO lay the eggs are medium at best.

Cochin are sweet birds and fun to watch BUT definitely not great or even good producers.

Because my black cochin is a broody beast I rated them at 1-2 a week. That is kind of what our average was when they were young. Mine are in the 10 year old range now.

I have two bantam cochins. I was getting about 8-10 eggs a week. One went broody so I gave her some eggs to hatch. Needless to say she hasn't layed in about 6 weeks now! Just bear in mind that chickens will lay more over the spring/summer months then slow down or stop over winter. Hybrids should lay well all year. Cochins are also renowned for going broody more often than other breeds.
