Since members here seem to know a lot about Bantam Cochins, I have a question, what hen do you think would make a prettier mix with red in the spring? My GLW Aurora, or my SS Riju?

Wow, you were really lucky, he is beautiful, they all are! There are lines of bantam Cochins that have silkied feathering; if I remember right, they were a mutation out of a frizzled line. They're pretty hard to find, though, unfortunately.I lucked out with my Reds and happened to see an ad someone placed selling out of them within driving distance of me. Took me a long time of searching to find my Blacks, and I'd nearly given up except for someone was hatching some for the Easter Hatchalong earlier this year and gave me contact info for the farm they originated from. ❤
Hmm, tough choice. If I'm gathering correctly from the chicken genetics calculator, they should produce reasonably similar offspring; mostly red with perhaps some black features like tail feathers and faint, incomplete lacing. I don't think you could go wrong with either, personally!![]()
Thank you! This is the one I usually use; it can be a bit confusing if you don't know the genetics behind the colors, though! You can pick the colors of your male and female birds on this page and then click 'To Chicken Calculator' for a bit simpler of a calculator. In either case, not all combinations will have example pictures, though.
What is goldlaced black tail?
From the example picture, it looks like a Wyandotte, but what would i put for SS?
I have one mixed Cochin. He’s a BR Cochin cross. He is the sweetest cockerel I’ve ever seen. We have him in with five silkies and just let’s those little babes snuggle under him. When I let him out with the big birds though he defends himself and asserts himself. Cute and cuddly but you don’t want to mess with him. I have to take more pictures of his cuteness.![]()
Thank you so much!Apologies, it was coop closing time here!
I believe goldlace black tail is what you're looking for for your Wyandotte as the other option is Sebrights specifically.
As for your Speckled Sussex, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Spangled is as close as you can get to it, and then in the calculator you have to change mh+/mh+ to Mh/Mh. That's the... 7th option down?
If anyone here is well-versed in genetics, please correct me if I'm wrong! View attachment 2457705
Aww, what a cutie!!He does look like a sweetheart!
