Bantam cochin

What causes feathering like this? We named her Farrah cause she feathers are feathered back like that. Is that normal for the breed or is she mixed with something else?

It's a shame, he's an incredibly handsome fellow.

The feathers might be some kind of genetic disorder. There are also some deficiencies that cause feathers to twist in other places, but I've never seen it happen in the hackles before.

Yes he is! So handsome, I may still keep him! Lol I thought he might have some frizzle lineage or another breed that has crazy feathers.

What's her age? My bantam cochins matured very early. Depending on your answer, I would not assume that's a cockerel.

Frizzle is common in Cochins, but I don't think that's what this is. I could be wrong though.

If you haven't heard a crow, hang in there a little longer. My 16 week-old looked very similar to this and started laying before 18 weeks. I understand the cockerel suspicion, but this breed has completely thrown me off!

Definitely no crowing yet. Until they crow, they're all hens to me! Lol it took my silkies 20 weeks to figure out they were boys. Luckily, my hatchery will trade roos out for pullets, so now it is the waiting game for crowing. I have an olive egger I am 99% sure is a cockerel and a speckled sussex everyone has said is also a cockerel, but i'm still hoping they might be wrong.
