I have a book (Choosing and Keeping Chickens by Chris Graham) that states that Bantam Cochins are mistaken for the Pekin breed of bantam chickens and that they are actually not related at all to Cochins except for their origins.

Anyone want to confirm or deny that for me? Just curious.

The birds in question are considered a true bantam and are known as Pekins in every country in the World except the USA, where they are called bantam Cochins.

pekins and bantam cochins are one in the same... no shorter legs, nor "more forward tilt" ..they are the same just different names in different parts of the world:)

eta: Nzpoter, now I see this is you and Im stunned. I know you have extremely nice birds but I also know they are the same breed as the ones I have... Are you making a funny

?? British websites refer to their birds as pekins... but they are the same as we have.

Edited to add again: I just did a little research and apparently there are some differences in "true pekin bantams" and cochin bantams and what is normally called pekin bantams.

very confusing. From what I got "true pekin bantams" do have the shorter legs and the more forward tilt and these differences among others make them a separate breed. But, most chickens that are referred to as "pekins" are in fact cochins. ...NZ?

The simplest way of explaining this is by looking at the large cochin....

Have you ever seen one with tail higher than their head in normal walking condition...?

I don't understand what you mean. Standards are a different breed than bantams...I got that

But is there a difference between bantam cochins and what some call "true pekin bantams"?

http://www.pekinbantam.co.uk/id10.html This site says that "true pekin bantams" are smaller than cochin bantams and have no standard sized counterpart... they were not derived from LF.

I never knew that.

well... cochin bantams should be the exact replica of their larger counterpart.... so if you can shrink a large cochin in your mind and put it side by side with a pekin bantam... then you'll see 2 different birds...
