Reason the little ducks could not get it started. Some feel the air cells are to small because we use to much humidity in the incubator. I think that when we breed our calls to have small short bills and short little eggs we have taken their ability to get out on thier own.

Last year I had a gray call male that started to get out of his egg he had a good start and then I had to go to work. I got home late at night went to bed and got up about 10 am. When I went to the incubaor he still was not out of his egg so I heped him out. He did ok in the brooder and I transfed him out to a brooder pen out doors and he did ok. When he was about a few weeks older I noticed he was walking with a limp. As he grew up he still had one leg weaker than the other. Today he walks on the first joint below his web and his other leg is perfect. When he turns to his good side he is the best type gray call I ever raised. But he can not be shown. In the water he does not show any handy caps. He should be able to breed with no trouble in the 8 gallon tube of water. If I would of pulled him out that night after I got off from work he may not have had a defect. I normaly do help chicks out of shells they never grow up to be any good but on these calls you may have to do it . bob

We have a call drake that walks on a stump....well, the leg was broke in a mink attack and the vet set the foot on pointing sideways....not sure why. Anyways, we kept him because he is awesome and can breed just fine in the water, but we had to make a ramp out of hardware cloth so he can get out of the water.

Anyone have any call ducks for sale come spring? I wanna raise them but cant find a starter pair

We had a pen of call ducks lay a few eggs then stop and the incubator was already going so heck, why not toss them in there. We have 2 fertile. Sure hope they both hatch because I don't want to raise only one this early in the season.

well, I was shocked myself Mrs. Turbo, my butterscotch had 2 eggs in her pen my husband told me, going to try and get out there when my sister relieves me today and after my college 5-7 pm class, and can get home and see, may put them in incubator myself too, and I had 3 incubators going, well we were without power for 3 days and like to have froze to death, and guess what?? Yep, I have 4 ducks hatched yesterday, and the about 6 more and 2 goose pecking out now, I have been at hospital, they admitted my 70 yr old daddy again, so haven't even candled or messed with them since the power outage last week, but got up today, and there was another hatched, god is good, but we are suppose to be in the 10-18 degrees this weekend, but we have the generator running now, laughing, but lost so many young chickens, and biddies with this unexpected cold that we are not use to having

To hear about all the little ducklings hatching is exciting. I am on a list or two for some call ducks and now that I hear people have them laying.. I know it is nearing time to get mine!!! WHHHOOOOO HOOOOTTTTT!!!

I'm thinning down my Black East Indies flock now that breeding season is here and wanted to know the male/female ratio that is recommended. I'm seeing pairs and trios, but considering how, ah, active, a couple of the drakes are, I'm afraid that pairs/trios with them around might stress the girls out. Last year I did 2:5 and ended up with some really rough looking girls.

There are seven hens in the flock. All of them are looking lovely, and it'd be nice to keep it that way through the season.
