In a recent order from Cackle Hatchery I got several EE pullet chicks. They hatched out 11 Jul, it’s now 28 Jul so they are coming up on three weeks old. (Great experience with Cackle, BTW, this is not a complaint!).
My question is regarding one of the chicks. It is about 1/3 the size of her hatchmates. They weigh 140-150 grams, she weighs 94 grams. They tower over her! She was verrrry slow to feather, her little tail is 1/4 the length of theirs. She is not sick- she’s active, robust, thriving, friendly. I confess, at first I thought “roo?” because of the slow feathering, but she is small all the way around.
Cackle does sell bantam EEs, but not this year according to their website. Is it possible that some did get incubated with the standard EEs? I’m assuming they keep pretty good control of their breeding flocks but…? Has anyone else had this happen? Do we have a freakishly small “standard” EE?? Will she catch up to her peers?? Is this a boy?? No worries on any of these questions. She is adorable, is one of the sweetest of the bunch, a well behaved roo is never a problem, and her feathers remind me of a lovely Missoni dress I owned once ( the kind that looks like the chevron afghan grandma knitted)!
Anyone else have this happen?

She could be a bantam or a failure to thrive. Was she always smaller?
Slightly smaller when we unboxed them three days after hatching, then just stayed small. Does not appear to be what I would call failure to thrive, I weigh my chicks (and chickens, and eggs…🧐🤣) and she is growing very well, just proportionally a lot smaller than her peers. She definitely keeps up with the big kids! I’m leaning bantam, wondering if anyone else got chicks like this as well.

Thanks so much for checking in!
He was adopted by a family who was looking for a roo not long after I made this post. I’ve just sent a text asking for an update and some pics. We’ll see!
Our experience with Cackle Hatchery was great, and we are so pleased with the health and appearance of the birds we received. Granted, we probably don’t have the most discerning taste, but we’re happy, and the chickens seem pretty content too! 😁
