***slight gore warning from pictures****
I tried to introduce my couple month old bantam girl to her new coup with another bantam d’Uccle roo and a Cochin last night when they were docile. When I went to check on them this morning I saw that they had pulled a few of her feathers between her shoulderblades. Then, when she tilted her head down I saw this neck wound.
I have isolated her in a pet carrier in my room with fresh shavings, food, water, and a small stuffed animal (I was told in case she wanted something to huddle against?). It’s not bleeding and she has so far been able to eat, drink, and chirp normally.
Being a young bantam she’s certainly smaller and more fragile than most chickens, and I’m wondering if there is any treatment I can give her or method to clean her wound gently. I will be setting up a heatlamp on her, but even with that I’m worried about her catching a cold if I try to clean the wound with water.
She doesn’t seem bothered by it; should I leave her be??
(if you need better pictures just let me know, she’s been a bit antsy since the incident)

I would try to rinse it out with vetericyn spray or saline solution and then coat it with neosporin triple antibiotic creme to prevent infection. Make sure not to use the kind with pain reliever in it, because it can be bad for birds. Other than that, keep her wound clean and moist. Make sure she is fully healed before you try to reintroduce her to the flock. It would probably be best to reintroduce her slowly. Leave her in the cage in their run or use another method that lets them see her but not harm her. They will hopefully get used to her presence and not be so violent when you eventually let her out with them.

Ok, Thank you for the advice!

If you use a wet wash cloth with saline solution or water you can control where you clean it, water wont go all over, vetracyn is amazing stuff can just use that keep her seperated so they dont keep after it, I used wound kote on my rooster when he lost his leg, i wrapped it with the flex bandage for a couple days then just used scarlex on it till it formed a seal.

I had a very small, few weeks old , maybe 4/5 week old that was bullied cause she was smaller than the others. Had a very similar neck wound so cleaned her up, made a little box inside with a teddy and but antiseptic cream on. The wound was grim , fresh open wound. got lots of cuddles, food, water and attention. She’s the most friendliest hen out my flock now
she’s thriving now nearly a year on.

Would a cotton swab be too stiff or unnecessary do you think? I’m going to be keeping her in a separate area until she’s healed so I’m not too concerned about her being bothered for the time being.

That’s great to hear! She was already the calmest of our new chicks, and has been doing very well with the special care she’s been getting. I’ll see about getting some antiseptic cream. Thank you for your reply!

Just remember cotton likes to stick, so could stick in the wound, But it would work, q- tip. I had a horse rear up and caught side of shade opened his neck up. Vet came out sewed him up , the instructions he gave me for a deep wound helped me save my rooster. Clean with warm washcloth at least 2 a day, not soaked just wet and warm. keep wound clean and use scarlex no bandage, you want to keep it dry. They both healed up, horse no scar at all, and Rooster survived losing his leg.
