Bantam roo with swollen eye - UPDATE

Yes, how is the birdie BirdLover?

Robin Hood seems to feel in tip top shape. He started crowing his head off in the mornings a couple of days ago. He eats well and struts around like he feels great. However, I think he has probably lost the bad eye. He goes back for a follow up at the vets this afternoon. The eye is open completely now but the eye ball itself seems to be bulging out of the socket. I'm anxious to see what she says is causing/has caused it. Thanks for asking about him.

Sara, It's been such a roller coaster ride for you and Sadie! I'm so so glad she's going to be okay.

Bex, how're "my" girls doing?

Ellen - hope things turn out ok with his eye, maybe he still has some infection behind it that is making it bulge, not sure if that is possible. Before Bridgette completely opened her eye, it looked just the opposite - flat - and I was concerned it would be bad but now that it is open all the way, it looks normal.

Glad to hear that Robin Hood is doing better! I sure hope that he hasn't lost the eye.

As for your girls - Naomi and Natalie are doing awesome.

Still no eggs, but that's okay! Naomi (the biggest) has become top chicken, much to my roo's dislike, but I think he has accepted it, because he runs from her, lol!

geez. what a story! If he loses his eye it really isn't that big of a deal. I have two kids in my 4H group that have had pet chickens that eventually became blind in both eyes and they lived long happy normal lives. both lived well past 8 years old. One was about 10. if his eye can't be saved at least he was! i am glad the vet saw him.

Good morning. My dh hogged the computer all last night so had to wait until now to report in.

Where do I begin? He definitely has lost his sight in the one eye and the vet said the bulging eyeball is being caused by either a tumor or an absess. The only way to know for sure is to remove the eye which is extremely costly. For now, she is going to treat it as an absess and keep him on the baytril for a month. She said the bad thing is, with chickens, their bodies form a very thick wall around absesses and it's hard for antibiotics to penetrate. If it is an absess and the antibiotics don't work, it will get bigger until it bursts, either through the throat or the eye. NOT a pleasant thought!! There was a ray of good news though. Last week he weighed in at 497 grams and now he is up to 624 grams. She was pleased with that and he seems fine in every other way. Sooo, looks like there won't be a lot to report for a while. If there're any changes, I'll post again. Thank you so very very much for all your encouragement and support. This wasn't supposed to happen! LOL I gave my tiny flock away last summer and had planned on being chickenless for a few years while I go traveling and stuff. I have to admit I like having one little toe still in the door though I wish it wasn't under these circumstances. THANKS AGAIN, ALL!! You rock!

Oh my, yes! A "little" time has gone by! LOL Robin Hood made a complete recovery but lost his sight in the bad eye. He is now living in Thurmont, Md. with a fellow BYCer and his flock and is being pampered just as much as I had hoped. There are pics of him in his new home somewhere on this site. The member's name is Threeboyschicks if you want to look at his web page. You'll see why he's in the best of hands. Soo, yes, a happy ending!
