Hello everyone,

My name is Silvia and I live in the suburbs of Los Angeles, CA. About a month and a half ago, a bantam hen showed up in my back yard. One of my neighbors used to keep chickens and roosters and moved away. Weeks later, the bantam started coming to my back yard. I was not able to find the owners since the property was sold and the people renting the house were long gone by the time I went knocking on doors to find the owners.

We took a liking to her and named her Pearl. She was very scared and skittish in the beginning but how she likes to lay down outside my window when I am working. She is getting a proper diet from our local feed store, has a small coop, a run, a nesting box with hay, and fresh water. She has even laid some yummy eggs too. Her food is inside her coop and she goes inside to eat. Her favorite snack is dried meal worms. She does not sleep in her coop and roosts up on a lemon tree in my neighbor's yard who has a pit bull. She spends most of the day in my back yard snacking on grass and scratching the dirt. Pearl often goes off into my neighbors yards. I worry about her wandering ways and sleeping up on that lemon tree where a predator can eat her. Pearl can easily scale our 5' tall block wall since she can fly. I bought her a separate run that measures 5'x 5' and 8' tall but she has not been inside it yet. Later this week I will be connecting the coop with the run. Pearl seems to like classical music too. She has never eaten out of my hand or let me pet her. I would value your advice and guidance on the following:
  • Once the coop and the run are connected, I will confine Pearl inside so that she is coop trained. How long should I leave her in the coop before letting her out? Is one week too much?
  • Should I get another bantam hen to keep Pearl company?
  • Based on the pictures, what breed is she? Orpington??
  • Is her coop and run large enough?
  • Based on what I have shared, does Pearl need anything else?
  • How can I gain more of her trust so that I can get closer and even pet her?
Pearl and I appreciate your wisdom!

Welcome to BYC! Thanks for joining us.

- A week usually does the trick, but you can extend that time if she is stubborn. Has she been laying eggs in the coop? Could you post a picture of your setup?

-Pearl looks to be a mixed breed. I'm sure she'd love some company; you could add more bantams or get some standard sized breeds.

-For standard size birds, you want a minimum of 5sqft per bird in the coop, and 10sqft in the run, but bigger is always better. Since bantams are a little smaller, it's about 3sqft per bird in the coop, and 8sqft in the run. These measurements can vary depending on the birds temperaments, size, and total amount of birds you have. Your current setup works fine for Pearl now, and might allow for one addition, but if you decide to really expand your flock, you'll need more space.

-Chickens aren't dogs. Most don't like to be pet or held, though some are more tolerant of it than others. Treats are always good motivator to get an animal to like you. (do make sure you're feeding treats sparingly, no more than 10% of her diet). Try and get her to eat from your hand.

You might consider clipping her wings. Eventually they'll grow back, but it should prevent her from hoping so she'll get used to living in the coop.

Pretty Pearl!
I got into chickenship almost the same way, except my visitor was a small rooster. He was already somewhat tame but treats helped win his trust. Treats should only be 10% of their diet, which takes some discipline since it is so fun to feed them. Mine especially like cheese shreds, raisins, cucumber slices, and watermelon when they can get it. We built a coop, got him a hen friend, and he lives a happy life. They have a coop/run (just the two) that is about 10x5'. I did a lot of research on making the coop safe and fortifying it to keep any possible predators out.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Aww...she's adorable! ❤ She could definitely use some friends at some point, birds her size. Keep working with her to lure her in, sit down on the ground with a bag of meal worms and try and hand feed her, toss worms around your legs. Do this daily and eventually she will trust you.

Best wishes with her!
