bantam sumatras

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Sumatras are beautiful birds. I'm sorry you have so many cockerels. As tempting as it may be to keep them all, you need to re-home some of them for the sake of your hens. The recommended rooster to hen ratio is 1 rooster for every 10 hens as too many roosters can be very hard on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially seriously injuring them. The good news here is that you can probably re-home such unusual and beautiful roosters much easier than you would be able to re-home a lot of other rooster breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Can you see the other two pics? i sent three but I'm only seeing one on my end. The rooster has red tips on his wings and neck. a little too red in the face though. i have only one of five that has the right mulberry face colors. the others all have some red in the face and neck area. i want to call it a wattle but i know it's called a dewlap.

i learned a little more on another BYC post regarding the color. it looks like mine are not necessarily Brown red but black with missing melanin. eitherway, he has a nice conformation and i will probably keep him for my daughter to show in 4H.

I bought a little chick today at a swap. I was told it is a bantam Phoenix pullet. I don't know anything about Phoenix breed but it it does not look like any pictures. It does look like a Sumatra picture.....she (I hope its a she) is black with a turquoise blue shimmer. Either the person I bought from misspoke or really did not know.....unless I am wrong and it is a different type Phoenix from the pictures I have seen. Either way he or she has been named Little Egypt. And she disappeared for a couple hours after i brought her home. Either she hid in the leaves in the pen (we are in the woods and have fallen leaves) or flew out of the pen. I was gone for a couple hours and when I returned there she was in the pen. We had walked thru the pen and didn't see her.
