Hi. I have one hen who has a very small amount of feathers on her bottom. She's red and almost looks scarlet in places
I first thought yeast but I Give yogurt and probiotics regularly. She's eating great and I haven't seen the other two pulling her feathers. I checked for mites and live and cannot find evidence of either on any of the birds. I was told that it sounds like another one is pulling out her feathers so I bought a product that's purple and smells like soap from a carwash. I'm also pitting Monostat Cream on her bottom. I'm attaching two close up pics but she's more red than either pic shows and she has some little (not tiny) black spots you can see in the pic. Our birds have plenty of room and she's been like this about 2-3 weeks. This is her only symptom Thanks.

The black spots could be anything, but they might be pinfeathers under her skin. See if you can upload the pics again down here in the comments.

if they are small black spots... almost like little freckles, then I would guess she has mites. Mites do not live on the bird, they live in cracks and bedding in the coop. They crawl onto the bird, feast, then crawl back off which is why you wouldn't see them on the bird.

They are more difficult to get rid of than lice. Mites require a super careful and thorough coop clean.

Forgot to upload. Sorry.

Can anyone see my pics now? Food for thought...if she does have mites then I wonder why the other two have fluffy pretty bottoms.

I can see the pics. I had two things potentially happen with my bird that had a red butt. My roo (who passed last year) had been stressed and picked on by an evil male guinea, who was trying to mate with him. He may have been a silent carrier for Mareks disease and it never showed up until after that. First symptom was a glowing red hot to the touch butt. He also had a pin feather that had gotten stuck under the skin in the same area. We never did know what exactly happened to him but he did get many of the mareks signs and we had to put him down, unfortunately. I hope that is not the case with yours. Sometimes mites cause this too.

Thank you for commenting. If she does have embedded pin feathers should I try and remove them?

I removed one on my roo, it didn't seem to hurt him. As long as you look up some instruction and sanitize your instruments. You will see a big lump under the skin and it will be hot in the area if there is a stuck feather.

I do not see anything that looks like an ingrown feather.

The skin is iritated ... but I don't see something that screams parasites ...

I am just not sure....

I would GUESS that it is a combination of some feather eating by herself and/or flock mates as well as a low level of parasites....

@casportpony are you good with this? Or know who is?
