The biggest risk, though, is hawks. I would at least put in some posts (taller than your round pen) and drape some netting over the top to protect them from hawks. Out in the open like that they are really sitting ducks, as it were.

Yes, I keep them locked in at night.

I wish I had the funds to be able to do all the work that needs to be done (cover for the roundpen). Unfortunatley I do not. Like I said, it's a work in progress. At the moment with 115* heat index weather I am just trying to keep them from being killed by the heat. Thanks for the input, I will get it done when I can.

Check at Lowes for bird netting. It is $12 for 100 ft. That would be much more affordable really. And at least you would have something to protect the chickens in the coop.

You know you might have to purchase three or four of the long 4x4's that are pressure treated aslo. Something to drape it over in the run.....we had to in our dog kennel run that is really big. DH used post hole diggers and buried them in some so they would stand. Then we draped our wire over it and attached at the tops of the sides. But the bird netting is cheap enough that you would not be out a fortune.
