gender of cat not important(either one, though ,should be fixed)and mine have NO interest in chickens.I do not let chicks run loose until at least 1/2 grown(not banties tho?) and tell your neighbor to spay her cat.(nicely though!) we have a program in ohio that adopts out neutered adult feral cats for barn living and they even do the vacc./etc upkeep as long as you agree to feed/water /watch out for them. have had longhaired cats in barn and wasn't a problem as long as I brushed ocassionally.(not good idea when you're allergic!) THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO NEUTER and most vets will do this when kitten is 2 lbs/3 months old whichever comes first! I would keep them enclosed ,if they're going to be acclimated to barn, in a large kennel until they're used to being fed there. you didn't say how old but I assume very young and that can be a problem. I know you would love a kitten but consider an already neutered adult cat for barn.
