Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Have my first chip in one of my eggs from Donna. So excited!!!

I think it depends on if the breeder selected for that, which Trisha does. On my last bast (not from this group) all the grey chested actually turned out to be girls but some of the white ones did also. So I am hoping that is enough gray on my Trisha baby to say "yep I am girl"

That would be a really dark chest for a boy, but I have had light chested girls before. I'm pretty sure that is a little pullet and I say "yep I am girl" with that cutie:)

I separated the "pullets" (best guess) out from my last hatch and they are in a brooder with a heat lamp. The blue hen that was broody, I put back in the flock to see if I can get her back laying soon.

I ended up letting my broody hen raise up 16 of the Barnevelder "cockerels". For a time she had over 25 to care for, but I knew she probably wouldn't be able to handle that many chicks once they were bigger. At least with such a nice fluffy hen....I don't have to run an extra heat lamp:)

Edited to add: Oh, and it seems I'm not done with broodys yet. My #1 Barnevelder hen (vB line) has just decided to go broody on me too. She's 4 years old and had been laying so well lately, but tonight she was sticking to the nest. I think this is the 3 time she's gone broody. I haven't decided yet if I'll let her hatch any, but she's a good mom and the same one in that "stolen pic" I posted.

Here's my project hen and "her" 16 chicks. Anyone want some cockerels???? LOL.

2 Silkies hatched but still no Barnies

. Set them the evening of the 7th and I have noticed the silkies start a few days early. Maybe because smaller birds? Thats all we've ever hatched from the bator.

If it helps, I set mine the evening of the Saturday 5th and they did not start hatching until the evening of Saturday 26th, then did not really full hatch until Sunday 27th. Of course I had some temp issues. Good luck

10 chicks even with the temp issues:) It really looks like that low temp period delayed hatching a bit, but I'm so glad they did finally hatch!

Congrats,
Trisha
