Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Oh, man, those BLUES!!!!!

Hey all - quick question - a bit off topic... 2 of my Barnies are broody and my one BCM went broody as well. They hog 2 out of 3 nest boxes during the day. (BCM and one Barnie share a box) Others were laying as normal sneaking eggs in where they could. Recently however, seems as though egg production amongst all has slowed quite a bit. I have 15 layers in all (mixed) including the 3 broodies. Yesterday and day before I got 5 eggs, today 2... that's out of 12 possible layers. Before the broodies I was getting 8-10 eggs a day. Seems as though the lack of laying is contagious. Is it my imagination???

Yes broodiness is contagious, but also the constant bickering and fighting over nest spaces can effect laying. I would recommend finding a way to remove the broodies from the coop. Either break them or give them some chicks so they quit hogging the nest boxes.

Aya,
Here's some interesting links to Barnevelders overseas just to add to the black vs laced breast debate with roosters.

Here's a page with "German" style Barnevelders. They tend to have more extreme tail sets.Though the roos still seem to have pretty dark breasts. It's hard to see if there's a lot of lacing.

This page is about bantam Barnevelders and doesn't translate well, but it seems a darker breast is desired in the males. "The glossy green breast is black on the front"

Silver Bantams.. Note the solid black breasts in the pics.

Cheshire poultry in the UK has these "high scoring blue" and regular Barnevelders. The blue male doesn't show much lacing on his breast at all but was said to have gotten high scores when shown. These are dutch bred birds.

Wow they come in solid white and solid black??? So pretty!!!!!

So, I keep thinking about laced breast vs solid breast vs blue breast with "Andalusian lacing". I'm going to keep taking pics as my blue cockerels get older while their colors are still changing. Here are some pics of two blue cockerels that I'm growing out. I wasn't sure if I was going to keep a blue cockerel this year... I thought I would just keep blue pullets to cross with my pure Barnevelder roo. But, these two caught my eye

I also have a few blue x "cornevelder" cockerels and pullets I'm growing out as a test cross. My #1 Barnevelder hen is determined to set, so I gave her 10 more blue x cornevelder eggs to hatch. I really don't need more chicks, but she really wants to hatch some eggs

This cockerel #1 is darker and shows more "Andalusian" lacing on his breast...no red/blue lacing though. He may keep more of the dark blue edge to his breast feathers. Very pretty, not as big as the second cockerel pictured. He has one less point on his comb too, but the comb looks a whole lot better than my 3rd generation roo's coarse comb.

Another pic of #1 cockerel

This boy is bigger and a tad lighter in color...he may end up with a "clean" blue breast. He has less Andalusian blue lacing. Looks like he'll have a nice comb with 5 points.

Another pic of #2 cockerel

Wow they're beautiful! I hope my Barnevelder chicks grow up to be that pretty! I'm not sure what their lacing pattern is.

They are so pretty!

Thanks for web links, Trisha. Those BV's are absolutely Gorgeous. I love that dark greenish black. But very little lacing.
"Any double lacing points to good fokeigenschappen.
De The rugveren zijn roodbruin met een zwarte omzoming. rugveren are reddish brown with a black omzoming"
That's what I want.

P.S. Your Blues are stunning. Now how do we transfer the lacing on their chests to the regular BV cockerals?
