Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

I hatched barnevelder chicks last may, they all had white chests and it was the males that feathered first, ended up with 8 roos and 5 pullets. Luckily sold on the roos to be raised for meat.

In my experience, yes, they are slow to mature. We didn't get eggs until they were around 9-10 months. But the wait was worth it; lovely breed with beautiful, big eggs.

Here are a few pics of my b/b/s double laced barnevelders. Unfortunatly i only got 1 blue pullet and 4 cockerels. Oh well.

Is the splash gene random? I am assuming this always requires a splash in the past to carry it forward. But, how does it start?
I ordered a dozen eggs and although the rest hatched standard, one was a splash rooster. Should I be pleasantly surprised at my fortunate treasure? Or should I be worried that this line is tainted blood?

Be happy! Much like Blue-Black-Splash in other breeds of chickens, the Splash (sometimes referred to as a "Buff" although I don't know why) means that it does not carry the black gene. If you have two black genes (one from each parent), you get black. If you have only one black gene, then you get blue.

Breeding a splash rooster to a group of black hens will give you all blue babies. Very pretty!

The blue gene mutation of the black and you always have 2, either black/black - blue/blue - black/blue or blue/black

depending on the breed you start with other genes effect the outcome, sometimes considerably.

Buff is a colour, as in buff orpington and is sometimes used incorectly

I went to buy a Welsummer pullet at a local farm and when I saw this beauty, I immediately fell in love with her. She is sweet, docile and let me pet her without flinching. The farmer said she was a mystery chick in the shipment and could not identify her. I posted this photo in another forum and people started saying BARNEVELDER! Since you all know this breed so well, can you confirm this is what she is?
