! So excited, I can see the eggs rocking so hopefully soon I will hear peeps or see pips ( most likely going to be late tomorrow at earliest. ). In other news I got my first egg from my grown barnevelders today !

I was surprised at the size and darkness of it, now I wish I knew who laid it... I saw my best hen out in the big run, and the other two incorrectly laced hens in the coop yard. Since the egg was warm I would hazard a guess that it was one of them. I am still working on the hen to roo ratio, we had the extra incorrectly colored roos listed for sale at $5.00 each. We were hoping to get some money back to count toward feed cost or general expense, but we didn't get anyone interested. They are now destined for freezer camp, as soon as dad finds a quicker way (that he likes) to dispatch them. The way he intended to do it was great written out on paper, but not as quick as he would have liked in reality.

Hi all,

I have four barnies. One is a very pretty looking Roo. They are thirteen weeks old. Any time I have had roosters they are crowing away. Some even before they get out of the brooder. This one is very calm and so far no crowing? Is this usual for this breed?

Thanks!

I currently have four grown barnie roos and they really don't crow too often, I hear them a few times in the morning and occasionally throughout the day. They are very nice compared to the RIR roo I had who crowed constantly and would never be quiet.

Not sure if some has posted this before, if yes, sorry, but when do girls start to lay eggs? Since they are slow maturing I was wondering when I should expect to see some treats for myself

It's pretty normal for breeder quality birds. My welsummers don't start laying until 24 weeks. Brahma's lay even later, like 8 months or something.

Well...the results are in. I have 3 barnevelder chicks. The fourth one tried to hatch....it zipped 1/3 of the way and then died in the egg...disappointing. It looks like I have 2 boys and a girl (very thankful for the girl that was last to hatch and came on day 23). Now, if they'll just stay alive for me, next year I can hatch some of my own!

Good news re starter stock. Still sorry you only got 3. But it's a start!
PICS!!!!! please.
