Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Looks like a dark cornish to me.

She has a head like Cornish but her type is not Cornish, maybe she is a Cornvelder

She does look like a cross of dark cornish with some other breed ( Barnevelder or other). A " cornevelder" is a nick name for a dark cornish x Barnevelder cross. She may just be a hatchery dark Cornish, but really is lacking many of the qualities dark Cornish are support o have like the judges said.

I lied - it's a Kirkland mouthwash bottle Here' a couple of pictures I have a couple more of the cup waterers that I'm going to attach to a bucket for in the run. Usually I see these attached to a PVC pipe, but those would freeze in the winter. I'm planning to use a standard stock heater for the bucket in the winter. Not sure if this will work, but I was thinking I might be able to use a really small aquarium heater for these small waterers for in the coop?

That is awesome! I have limited space inside the coop. This would be perfect,especially in the winter!

I'm curious about the "Cornevelder" cross. Is it kind of a dual purpose spin on a regular Barnie? I'm curious because I like to raise as much of my own food as possible and I think it would be neat if that kind of cross yielded a good eating bird. Trisha, I know you have some...what is the purpose of this cross? Is it to improve other traits or is it intended to be a dual purpose kind of bird?

My cornevelders originally came from an out cross to make some extra meat birds. I think they would make ok meat birds, but there are many other crosses and breeds that would make even better table birds. Sex link crosses and or white or light colored birds would probably make a better meat bird project than "cornevelders". Sex links would allow you to sell off the pullets as layers ASAP. White feathered birds make much more appealing table birds when plucked. You can use barnies to create sexlinks.

My cornevelders are now pretty much back to being just barnies. I have been breeding back to pure barnies each generation. They do still retain a tad more meat in the breast and oddly lay darker eggs. I kept working with them so that I could have a source of "new blood" to work with especially since they have been laying darker eggs than my pure barnies.

I wanted to make sure I'd actually HAVE Barnevelders before I introduced myself, but seeing that there are 5 bouncing around in the incubator, I think it's safe now...

I bought eggs from TLS Ranch, and I am so excited to join your ranks. I have to say that I love the tone of this thread, and how everyone works together so harmoniously. (Not so true with some of my other breeds...) I'm so excited to add Barnies to my flock!
