Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

I love this list...

Donna,

Well it sure looks like you've done a great job already. Your Year 2 would produce only split silver males so no loss there. As for the penciled vs double laced debate, I wouldn't be so sure to discard the birds patterned like the one on the right. I have had birds that look just like that turn into nice Barnies. I probably wouldn't call them penciled yet. From the breeding you have described there is a strong probability that penciled hasn't shown up yet. Depending on the split rooster you chose whether it was Ml/Ml or Ml/ml (no way to tell) you would have either 1/2 Ml/Ml, 1/2 Ml/ml (as I suspect) or 1/4 Ml/Ml, 1/2 Ml/ml, and 1/4 ml/ml since the hens are certain to be Ml/ml. When a bird is Ml/ml it looks double laced since Melanotic is dominant. Also, I always associate penciled with having white heads. That said, you know your birds much better than I do, if you want to purify your line of ml and you are confident the 'right' birds are penciled go for it. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the advice Al. But, ugh, you know that's not what I want to hear! I don't really have room to keep this many, 24 little cockerels and 12 pullets or so, I can't even count them, I think there are more than that! They're all really adorable but I've got to get the numbers down soon somehow. So, obviously, the boys is the place to start. Do you have a rooster now that is correct? What am I looking for? I don't even know what a silver Banie roo is supposed to look like? If I pick the wrong rooster how will this affect my next breeding?
Do Andy and Trisha have any thoughts about the patterns I'm seeing? Are you getting this too?

Thanks,

Donna

Donna - If all goes well a silver rooster should look just like a normal Barnie rooster, but with red swapped for white. I don't mean for that to sound obvious, it's just something I always keep in my mind when I'm making a selection at any age. After looking at hundred of rooster pictures you will be overwhelmed with variability and that's when you need to refer to the SOP and your own preferences.

Snapped a couple baby pictures today:

The two little ones are from tls_ranch. They're a week and a half old, standard laced. I hatched 15 out of 17 eggs. 13 chicks have survived so far.

Can we say rooster?

These two big kids are from pickledchicken. I think these guys are about 4 weeks old (he hatched them). He shipped me 12, I'm down to 11. They carry the blue gene. Question: When can you tell if they are blue laced? Should their feathers already be coming in blue? I'm guessing I got all standards if that's the case, but there's still the chance of getting it on future breedings.

Time is flying and crawling at the same time. I want these kids to grow up so I can see what they'll look like. lol

Bonnie they are looking great you can usually spot the blue on the primaries in the wings. It shows up pretty good there I'll try and take some pics tomorrow for comparison. Here are a couple little peeps that are about two days old :)

If they show blue then they carry the blue gene. If they are standard/ black they wont carry it. You should be able to see blue at this age. Are any of the 24 chicks blue? You can post pics of their wings if you can't tell and then maybe we can help. Trisha

I'll have to pull out the Barnevelder chicks and snap some wing pictures this weekend. I have about 50 chicks in the brooder right now. It's hard to tell who has what. lol

I think I did know that about the blue lacing, I forgot. I still get confused by chicken genetics. I need a program or spreadsheet to keep all of this straight for me.
