The second one looks a little bit prettier if that is what you are going for
Hard to tell from the pics. The first one seems to have better color...usually darker Roos produce better colored females. The second looks much lighter colored in the hackle and saddle, but seems like he has more size or body to him. Maybe use both and see which produces the best? Trisha

Thank you, the darker one is quite a bit bigger, and is more dominant

, I need to get rid of one as soon as I can, lol, they're not fighting, but Iv'e got to many Roos, just 2 Barnies though

Hi everyone - thanks for all of the encouragement. Based on what you said, the Barnie hatch wasn't too bad then. I got about 40% - would have been 50% except one died while trying to get out of the shell. For the silkies, I only got about 22% - not good, but I think I know what went wrong. I heard that they drown much more easily if the humidity is raised too soon or too high during lockdown. I suspect I raised it a bit early (17.5 days - with silkies 18.5 to 19 is recommended) and a bit too high as well. I won't try to hatch them together again.

BTW, I do have a splash Barnie in the bunch. If the white chest is a still a good determination of gender, then it's a boy - and I may have only one pullet. That would be sad, but I'd keep the girl and the splash I think.

So, how do I start to determine which of the "too many roosters" to cull. I was planning to keep only the two blues, but if type is the most important factor then maybe I should pick the best blue and the best black? Problem is I don't have a good "comparison" picture to determine what I'm looking for in type. The text descriptions in the standard just don't work for my brain like a picture would.

If I post pictures of the five roosters and three hens from Greenfire, would you guys give me honest evaluations on type and color? Can you tell much at this age? They are about 10 weeks old now.

Thanks!
Shanna
Hi Shana

Ten weeks is sort of young to be picking birds on type or for color, at least it is for my birds. I have seen a lot of development both good and bad that happens right up to maturity. If I see a bird this age that has an obvious fault that I am trying to breed away from then I would cull. Two examples are feathered shanks and leg problems these are two issues that often show up by 10 weeks. Otherwise you will be happy if you wait before making your selections. At t ten weeks they are awkward middle schoolers.

Hi Barnie fans,

About to go and look at 5 Barnie 7 week old chicks, hoping to see the mum and dad as well to get an idea if they are full breed. Never had this breed before but all the information tells me they are great birds. Not sure if the breed has suffered in Australia and has ended up being diluted from the original stock. Fingers crossed they look good. Will take some pic and post and get feed back.

By all

This post is actually about my one Barnevelder who I don't think is very well. But there is background to all this - so here it is :

I have three large chickens and one bantam. The two largest chickens ( a RIR and Welsummer ) are still laying even though it is Winter here in Australia, and they are all moulting. They have bright red combs. The next largest chicken - sized between a bantam and standard is a Barnevelder. She is not laying nor is my Aussie Araucana. Today Milly ( Barnevelder ) is very quiet, seems to need the sun as she squatted for a time in sunlight, has a very pale comb and doesn't seem very interested in anything. It is probably time I gave them some worming mixture in their water, perhaps that is the problem - although there is absolutely NO sign whatsoever of worms in their droppings, and the other two large laying chickens are in good health. I am quite concerned about Milly - she's a lovely chicken, and it's obvious something has upset her in some way. I doubt she would be trying to lay - as she hasn't laid an egg for several weeks now - stopped with the cooler weather and the start of her moult.

( The only surprising thing is that my two larger birds are still actually laying - through the moult, and into extremely cold Winter weather. )

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong, or is it normal for a moulting chicken to have a pale comb or perhaps feel unwell ? Any replies would be much appreciated.

I know 10 weeks is young to make decisions, but I have 5 cockerels and only 3 pullets, and the cockerels are starting to get mean with each other. I don't have a bachelor pad to move them too, so I don't know what else I can do but to let a few go. There are three that I think are obviously better than the other two, but as you said - it's pretty early! Anyhow, here are some pics in case anyone wants to provide feedback. If you had to chose two right now, which two would you keep?

First the ones that I think aren't as good. This one (green band) has a weird tail and looks knock kneed.

There isn't anything as obvious wrong with this one (orange band), but it's just a bit smaller and to me just doesn't seem as good.

Here is the other black one (red band). I think he's the nicest of the blacks by far, but then I really don't know much, so please provide any feedback you have:

And here are the two blues - the first one is bigger, has a broader chest, and has more brown in the lacing. the second one is darker, has more blue and less brown (I don’t know which is better on the coloring), and is a bit smaller with a slightly narrower chest. Thoughts?
