Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Ok So here are the plum colored eggs from the Silver Blue Double Laced Barnie Project Birds.

1. Four of the eggs "WET" and a single sussex egg for comparison in the center.

2. Same eggs a while later when half dried.

3. Same eggs when dried. They look the color of wild plums.

The last dark spots on the eggs in 3. vanish when eggs are completely dry.

If you look really closely at them in your hand you can see a rough deposit on the surface. When the eggs are wet the water changes the reflective properties of the surface and the underlying color shows through. This egg finish is not normal for Barnevelders, since the breed (and all of my Gold Double Laced Barnevelders) has nice shiny surface eggs. But I thought it was sort of interesting and I had not seen it in my pure Barnie lines.

The Croad Langshan are known to lay eggs this color, and I have seen pictures of them, but I don't know if they are similar in having the rough micro-surface. Perhaps this is a throwback to the Langshan ancestry that is in the Barnevelder family tree.

I see this pink bloom on my Barnie eggs quite often.

Donna that's interesting because I had not seen it before and I used a Johan Rooster from your eggs two years ago, so perhaps he brought it with him. I am pretty happy with the wet color just the same.

Andy

I think the bloom will not be as heavy as the hen gets older, that seems to be how mine are usually. I don't have any laying plum eggs right now, I never knew how to describe the color, I called it pinkish brown.

Andy you used a johan rooster with what pullet?
Well all my Barnevelder roosters that I have used on the silver and blue projects were Johan line, several years removed of course. I got my original Johan eggs from Johan in 2009. I got a nice Johan hen from Christine Cole that same year after she had used her in breeding program. Christine sold all her Barnies I think and focuses on silkies now, oh and snakes. I saw some beautiful corn snakes she breeds at a chicken swap in Corvallis two weeks ago. Well the 2009 birds were my Johan foundation birds. Then in 2011 I swapped some eggs with Donna and raised up a Johan rooster from those eggs to add some new blood. That boy was my main flock rooster in 2012 and was grandfather to the silver blue hens I posted this week. Hope that answers it. I now have his son and grandsons in my rooster pen.

I do have one other Double laced Barnevelder rooster that is great grandson of some Ledford line pullets I got from Trisha. I am growing him up to see how he looks, he is 7/8 Johan and 1/8 Ledford. I have only been keeping pullets up until now from crosses to that line. Everyone is color coded and eventually if they go into a breeding pen gets a numbered band so I can keep track of the lines.

I also am raising a blue double laced rooster 7/8's and a silver split rooster 7/8's this year to cross back to my Double laced hens. I am going to breed the silver split to silver to see if I can start to improve the silver.

Thank you and I wish you great success and pleasure with your Chickens. I'm in Oregon, the rainy part. Congrats on your showing! How about showing some pictures of the winning pullet?

Here are some updated pictures of some of my cockerels. These 2 are my favorites so far. Some of the pictures make them seem darker overall than they are in person.

This one (#1)looks pretty good over all. Good size, type and pattern.

Pretty good pattern under the hackle feathers. Could show a little more red, but his hackles are just coming in and it is a little early to judge the balance of red/ black.

Wing and "shoulder" pattern looks pretty good. He is still feathering in so some feathers are not complete. Feather width is pretty good, but his brother has wider feathers.
700

Saddle feathers could show clearer pattern when viewed from underneath, but are better than his brother's
700

Hackle feathers show good rich red color, not too much black or red.
700

His brother (#2) slightly bigger, higher wing carriage, very good feather width and type. Some color and pattern issues.
700

Both of them together.

I am trying to thin down my pullets. It is so hard to decide! I would like to get down to 15 hens and 15 pullets. My final selection will be after they all start laying. I have plans for some trap nests so I can make sure of who lays the best egg color etc.

One of my 30+ pullets remaining from earlier selections. Her tail is in a more relaxed position.

One of my 1-1/2 year old hens. She is just finishing up molting. She was on my " cull " list for lacing quality due to the peppering and lacing issues on her tail. But I decided she will stay due to her fast molting, egg production traits and egg color. She is really strutting and excited in this picture, so her tail set looks too high.
