thank you very much andy and tail feathers

i am happy for the information., as i said i am new to this sort of thing, i can understand freezer camp and happy they are dual purposes my idea when i first hear cull is to kill and throw away which imo is wrong if your gonna eat it or give it away i think thats fine i like to make sure the bird is used and not gone to waste!

thankfully( for the roosters!) i have not got a freezercamp im still trying to get to terms with the idea and how to do it all when it becomes necessary im a wimp at the idea of killing and eating my own - yet i eat chicken !

and no my little boy rooster will not be bread or shown as i have no idea on how to do either and believe i should if iwanted to do either read upthoughrully so i do not diverge from the breeds strenghts and wants in that bird

thank you vey much

chickchicks.......The key for me is to remember how long (6 to 8 weeks) and what kind of life the grocery store chickens have. It helps if you don't name them either. My birds have a much better life, even if only for 6 months. We haven't put many in the freezer, but we have done a handful. The first time is the hardest of course, since you don't know what to expect. (it's easier if you come from a hunting family - unfortunately neither DH or I did) DH usually does the killing part, as I raise them and he's more detached. The flapping did really bother him the first time, so I would suggest a 5 gallon bucket handy to put them in for that part. I do everything after that - my step dad was raised on a chicken farm and he came and showed me how to gut them.

I have had to put a couple chicks down myself and that's the hardest of all. But I didn't want them suffering, so it had to be done.

I've given several cockerels away too. Hens that I'm not keeping have gone to friends also.

Kim your Johan boy is looking really good:)

My pullets have been slow to start this year, but I am still getting eggs and I just had two pullets start laying this week. Now I'm just waiting for the rest of the pullets to start up.

I have my blue roo in with my Barnevelder hens/pullets and my best Barnevelder cockerel from this year in with the blue hens/pullets and "cornevelders".

I get some eggs in the bator so they will hatch sometime around the first week in Jan.

Here's my best cockerel from this year's hatches (3/4 vB and 1/4 Johan). He hatched the begining of June (still growing) and he also doesn't have much white fluff showing.
