I have a barnevelder, who is barely out of its egg (still wet - literally seconds) and I can already see a comb sticking up! This is my first barnie, so can anyone tell me if they all come out like this or am I really lucky (or unlucky) and am able to sex it straight away? None of the other chicks I've ever hacth have come out with anything on their heads.

Some of my chicks with the biggest combs at hatch have been pullets. It doesn't mean a thing.

You can generally sex barnevelders as day olds though, once it's dry. (it's not 100%) Boys tend to have white chests and girls tend to have taupe colored chests.

I hatched a boy and a girl Barnevelder among some other breeds and they were so different from each other that I thought they were different breeds! There was never any doubt that the boy was a boy, but the tip off for me was his huge tree-trunk legs!
