I was wondering how the two compare/contrast and how they stack up to each other. Specifically in relation to foraging ability, feed consumption, laying ability and temperament. I'm looking for a hardy, good foraging bird that lays well and has a calm disposition.

I used to have Barnies from Johan line. I found them to be unable to withstand our Iowa Winters. They were not hardy at all, and speaking to Johan himself (RIP), he had the same issues.

Buckeyes, OTH, are tops. They are some of the best foragers I've ever had, friendly, hardy as all get out. They tend to go broody and make excellent mothers. Looking out into your pen and seeing a sea of red is something to behold. And depending on where you get your birds from, they are ready to dress out rather quickly.

While Barnevelders are easy on the eyes with their pattern and very calm, I much prefer Buckeyes. I have 2 Buckeye hens leftover from when I bred them and they are two of my favorites. I will be breeding them again this fall and I cannot wait.

There is a breeders list here.
