Barnyard Surprises

Nutty I am wondering about the bigger white head spot ones though.
What do you have going on here?
A SF barred rooster over what? Barred hen?
Assuming if you're talking about larger vs smaller head spots that there is barred hens involved.
Ya largest head spots should be male but that would be the ones that got barring from both patents. If rooster is only SF then some of the males would of only got barred gene from mom and also have smaller head spot.
Those would look same as the girls so you will be unable to sex those.

Check out the comb on this black one. Got a couple that are already showing combs. The yellow/black ones are interesting still. Yallar is getting black feathers on the wings.

Several of the black ones have 2 colored feet.

No poopy butts and everyone is staying in the one end of the coop.

So if you had to guess sexes based off of what their postures and attitudes are...how many boys and girls do you have? :pop
We've got 23 chicken chicks and not enough patience. Getting a lot of meal worms and doing a lot of talking. The only white one is leaning towards cockerel. Not happy about that, but time will confirm. Going back to statistics, 11.5 are cockerels. :D With a +/- of 10 chicks confidence interval.

The other problem I'm having, with 16 black fluffs running amok, I don't see individuals. I see the flock. Like a herd of zebras through the Serengeti. The 7 non black are getting the attention since they are the standouts. They are also the ones getting the meal worms first.

Now I should go see how many of those are boyish. BRB

Right back where I started. I have no idea. Since Dominique pea combs are present, I can't look at combs. Stature wise, 1 red chick is male. 6 are I dunno. Several of the 16 black chicks are upright posture.

11 days old. The zebra herd will run from one end of the 8' coop to the other. Depending on which door I've opened. Too funny. Meal worms are making a couple curious, but no one wants to be the first to venture. I'll keep working on that.

All 23 are healthy and eating well. I'm thankful for that.

The coop has a 2" ledge for the door. They have taken to perching up there to see the world. Too cute. DD said a mocking bird was peeping like a chick. I've been listening, but haven't heard it. That would be cute.

Watching children and chicks grow and mature is a fascinating study. Almost as amazing as watching eggs develop into chicks.

2.5 weeks since hatch. Almost quail sized. Active. Meal worms have won them over. Several and I are best buddies. Unfortunately, the bravest are boys.

The cockerels are getting thicker and more color, sorry Batty, colourful legs. The mixture of pea combs and single combs are interesting to me. Looks like we got a grab bag. Aren't genetics wonderful?

Have orange legs, grey legs and black and orange legs. The Dominique barring is coming through on several. The black of the Australorp is dominant on several. I wanted more barred hens. And black ones. So far, looks like we have success with the 16 black and yellow chicks.

The non black chicks.
4 Red - leaning towards 3 males.
2 yellow/black/grey - pretty birds. I'm hoping pullets.
1 white - leaning to cockerel, but not definite.

Graduating to tractor in 8 days with the quail hatching. Although, I might try earlier, I do want them larger before tractor.
