Barnyard Surprises

View attachment 1786082 Glued to shell was walking around this evening. Dry but crusty. Coated in olive oil and put in brooder for food and water. This one had a rough, gunky time of it. BUT walking around looking OK. Call it 24 hatched.
24/40 = 60%.

Last 7 eggs are no good. Candled and nothing gonna happen. They need to be planted.

6 Quail walking around. 1more pipped.
Bottom right yeller...is that a quail? Do I see a couple black spots?

Can someone count these & confirm 24 chicks?

17 black - eggshell is top right
3 red
1 yallar
1 chipmunk
2 yallar/black

Talked with Chicken Rancher today. White from brown egg may be Delaware descent. White chicken. He’s got a couple.

Bout a month ago, a bantam rooster showed up in his yard. No clue who dropped it off. He was trying to decide when his Dominique rooster decided for all concerned. May have gotten to a hen.

Be interesting if game bird genes are here.

I don’t know if you are joking or not but yes.
:love
You are wonderful! All present and accounted for.

#1 & 19 are the yallar/black ones. Shall be most interesting to see. How best to mark? Zip tie leg bands?

Still want to put the quail with them, but really hesitant. Quail stay in incubator another nights.

I would do zip tie leg bands. I tried the actual chick leg bands and within a couple of days they had almost outgrown them.

I have no idea on the quail/chick cohabitation, but your plan sounds good to me. :)

Remember quail are very dumb.
The chicken chicks might be able to help teach them.

Santa keeps them together, I think, for a few days at least.
