I have a barnevelder I hatched out, now about 8 weeks old, and I just realized today that she doesn't appear to be laced. Instead, she looks barred.

So I'm wondering. Is this normal for a little chickie? Will she become laced instead of barred after she goes through all the molting? Has anyone ever heard of this? I've read a little online about barnbars, and also that in the US, barnevelders have been crossed with other breeds. Do you think that maybe some other gene showed up here out of the blue? I'm really puzzled!

ETA pictures and also to say that SOME of her feathers are laced.

What a singularly unhelpful comment. Of course I know what barnevelders are supposed to look like. Of course I've searched online. How else would I even know about barnbars?

If you didn't mean to be snarky, and something just got lost in online message board translation, I apologize, and let's start over and be friends. But otherwise ...

This is what you should see and it is absolutely normal. This autosomal barring, caused by the pattern gene, will gradually be replaced by double laced feathering as she matures.

David, thank you! Because I was getting a little bummed out. Not that I don't find her absolutely gorgeous with the barring. But you know ...

I agree, with new members it would help to give them the google link of the information that Zoomia is looking for of why there is barring instead of pencilling.

My guess it is the genetic playing havoc. I never had raised barnvelders but had some bantams which they were goreous.

I hope someone like Tailfeathers might know on this one!
